The Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council, like all DD Councils throughout the United States and territories, is mandated in federal law P.L.106-402 to engage in planning, advocacy, and capacity-building efforts contributing to persons with developmental disabilities leading more self-determined, inclusive, and productive lives in their community. The Council releases grants or "Notice of Funding Avilable (NoFAs)" several times each year. If you are interested in applying for one of these systems change opportunities, please monitor this section and the "What's New" section of this web site or you may contact us and ask to be added to our mailing lists.

The Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council has a new funding opportunity. The document is attached in its entirety with instructions on how to apply. A brief summary is below:
The Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council (MODDC) is inviting proposals to design a curriculum for lay educational advocacy training that will empower self-advocates, family members, and community members to support families and students who receive IDEA or 504 services in their neighborhood... school, with their non-disabled peers, while accessing grade level curriculum.
The purpose of this grant is to develop an education law curriculum to be used in a training program. This training program will assist and enable concerned citizens to master information and negotiate systems in order to help secure the educational opportunity that are a civil right and legal mandate for students with disabilities.
Through this grant, a lay educational law curriculum will be developed:
The curriculum will be culturally responsive, incorporate multi-modality learning and the concepts of universal design for learning, grounded in the socio-political model of disability, hold each student to high expectations with the presumption of competence, practices of inclusive education, and easily adaptable for changes in the education practices and policies of Missouri schools.
The proposal will include how the potential grantee will partner with other agencies that provide educational services to students with disabilities and their families to ensure the curriculum is specific to the patterns of exclusion for Missouri. Potential partners may include: Missouri Protection & Advocacy Services, Missouri Family-to-Family Resource Center, MPACT, and Legal Services of Eastern Missouri's Children's Legal Alliance.
Project models include the Georgia Advocacy Office's Parent Leadership Support Project lead by Leslie Lipson, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Volunteer Advocacy Project, and Disability Rights Nebraska's program in development.
