IRWEs are “out-of-pocket” costs for items or services needed to work because of one’s disability. These costs can be transportation, therapy, attendant services, assistive technology, medical needs, and more.
PASS is a tool that helps an individual with a disability reach a work goal.
PASS enables a person to receive higher SSI payments while working than they would ordinarily get to help pay for expenses needed to reach their goal. A PASS can offset up to 100% of the expenses the person pays for to reach their goal, including:
- transportation (even buying a vehicle),
- training,
- education,
- tools,
- equipment,
- computers,
- assistive technology,
- business start-up costs and more.
In some cases, a person who has too much income (like SSDI) to receive SSI can actually use a PASS to qualify for SSI.
